What we get asked most often

What is ETL processing applied to spatial data?
ETL stands for Extract, Transform, Load : pull the data from its source, transform it against defined rules, then load it into the target system. Applied to spatial data, the work also covers geometry, projection and topology, not just attributes.
When is a script better than doing it by hand?
As soon as the operation repeats. A one-off conversion can be done by hand; a monthly update, an import from a partner or a pre-publication check are all better automated. The script fixes the rule and removes the variation between two runs.
Do you work with proprietary formats?
Yes. The processing chains handle the common GIS and CAD formats, open and proprietary alike. Migrating from a legacy system to an open solution is one of the most frequent requests we get.
What does topology checking cover?
Verification of geometric consistency: unclosed polygons, overlaps, gaps between adjoining parcels, invalid geometries. These faults go unnoticed by eye and break area calculations and spatial analysis alike.
Do you take on old or poorly structured data?
It comes up often. The work covers assessing what exists, defining the target model, converting, then checking the results. Data that cannot be recovered is identified and documented rather than patched on guesswork.
What happens to the data once processed?
It can be delivered as is, loaded into your existing database, or published in a map portal. Processing is rarely an end in itself: it prepares the data for publication or for operational use.
